Yeshua said, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19.
How closely do you want to follow? If you look at the Master's pattern, He prayed and praised Abba before, during
and after the things He did. He invited the Father to be with Him through everything!
When we find ourselves wondering "what do I do now?" Yeshua's advice was basically to copy Him: "Come to me
all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke (duty) upon you and learn from me; for
I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke (duty) is easy, and my burden is
light." Matthew 11:28-30
The ancient tradition of prayer is to incorporate actual verses into the prayer dialog, so let's look at what Yeshua had
to say regarding how we are to pray and how important prayer was to Him:
But I say this to you: "Love your enemies! Pray for those who are cruel to you, so that you will become sons of your
Father, who is in heaven. God's sun shines upon good people and bad people. It rains upon the people who do right
and upon those who do wrong. If you love only those people who love you, then you are not any better than anyone
else. Even tax collectors do the same thing! If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing? Even people
without God do the same thing! You must be mature, as your Father in heaven is." Matthew 5:44-48
"And when you pray, don't be like the two-faced people. They love to stand praying in the churches and on the
street corners, so that other people will see them. I am telling you the truth: They have received their reward.
Instead, when you pray, go into your private room and close the door. Then pray secretly to your Father. He sees
this in secret; He will repay you. When you pray, don't use words without thinking, as people in the world do. They
think that by saying many words they will be listened to. Don't be like them. Your Father knows the things you
need, even before you ask Him. This is the way you should pray:
'Father in heaven, may Your name always be kept holy. May Your kingdom come. May what You want
done, be done. May it always be here on earth the way it is in heaven. Provide the food we need each day.
Forgive us of the sins we have done in the very same way we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us.
Keep us away from temptation. Rescue us from the evil inclination that is born in us.'
If you forgive people of the things they have done wrong to you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
However, if you do not forgive people, then your Father will not forgive the wrong things which you have done."
Matthew 6:5-15
Then Jesus said to his followers, "There is a big harvest, but there are not many workers. So, pray that the Owner
of the harvest will send more workers into the harvest field." Matthew 9:37-38
After Jesus sent the people away, he went up to a mountain to be alone and to pray. It was evening and Jesus was
the only one there. The boat was already a long way from the shore. The waves were beating against the boat as
they were heading into the wind. It was after three o'clock in the morning when Jesus came to them. He was walking
on the lake. Matthew 14:23-25
Then some people brought their small children to Jesus, so that he could put his hands on them and pray. But his
followers told the people not to do this. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me. Don't stop them, because
the kingdom of heaven belongs to people who are like these children." Matthew 19:13-14
Jesus said to them, "It is written, 'My house will be called a place for praying.' but you have changed it into a hiding
place for thieves!" Matthew 21:13
One time (Yeshua) was praying in a certain place. When he stopped, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach
us to pray, since John also taught his disciples. Yeshua said to them: This is the way you should pray:
Father in heaven, may Your name always be kept holy. May Your kingdom come. May what You want
done, be done. May it always be here on earth the way it is in heaven. Provide the food we need each day.
Forgive us of the sins we have done in the very same way we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us.
Keep us away from temptation. Rescue us from the evil inclination that is born in us.
Then Jesus said to them, "Suppose one of you went to your friend's house in the middle of the night and said to him,
'A friend of mine has come into town to visit me, but I have nothing for him to eat. Please give me three loaves of
bread.' Your friend inside the house answers, 'Go away! Don't bother me! The door is already locked. My children
and I are in bed. I cannot get up and give it to you.' I tell you: perhaps friendship is not enough to make him get up
to give you the bread. Yet, he will surely get up to give you what you need, if you are not ashamed to continue
asking. So, I say to continue asking, and it will be given; keep searching and you will find; knock and the door will
open for you. If you ask, you will receive; if you look, you will find; if you keep knocking, the door will open. Do
any of you have a son? What would you do if your son asked you for a fish? Would any father give his son a snake?
No, you would give him a fish. Or, if your son asks for an egg, would you give him a scorpion? You are carnal
men, yet you know how to give good gifts to your children. Surely your heavenly Father knows how to give the
Holy Spirit to those people who ask Him.'' Luke 11:1-13
In the Hebraic Roots Movement, we emphasize choosing to pattern our lifestyle after the Master. We accept that
while He 'tabernacled' or lived with mankind, His was a completely Torah observant lifestyle. He also was a com-
pletely Torah observant teacher, keeping the ancient mitzvot (commands) and revealing it in ways that had not been
done before.
We have assembled a selection of traditional family prayers and blessings for your convenience:
Shema (The most often said prayer)
